IGE PEARL Course

The IGE-PEARL Course is a certified 60hr structured course of 19 modules and 3 institutional case studies, covering Islamic Gift Economy (IGE) and Social Permaculture to empower us in building self-sufficient local economies based on justice, magnanimity, and coooperation, to overcome the current destructive neoliberal economic and financial system.

The curriculum is based on the works of economy and livelihood of Imam Ash-Shaybani, Imam al Muhasibi, Imam al Ghazali and others, as well as contemporary ecologists and economists like Herman Daly, EF Schumacher, and Bill Mollison. With scholars, entrepreneurs and activists as presenters, the course aims to instill the knowledge and skills to develop social enterprises and facilitate with healthy community building for the 21st Century.

Part 1: Islamic Gift Economy Certificate Course

Based on classical scholarhsip and contemporary economics. Topics include Islamic economy, Islamic contracts, fard kifayah, maslaha, al-iqtisad, tadbir al manzil, establishing awqaf, justice and magnanimity in transactions, and socio-legal strategies for reviving mu'amalah.

Part 2: Social Permaculture & Invisible Structures

Based on contemporary permaculture, agroecology, and ecological economics for developing regenerative agro-economies based on Islamic & indigenous principles. Topics include moral principles of Social Permaculture, strategies for building resilient communities, social impact investing, and money.

Part 3: Practical Case Studies and Examples

Real-life, successful and practical examples with guest speakers from an array of scholars, academics, entrepreneurs, community organisations, and activists. Topics include successful awqaf, autonomous regenerative economies, and case studies of social enterprises, agroecology & civil society organisations.

Part 4: Student seminars

Students are expected to present on an IGE-PEARL topic of their choice to express their critical appreciation of concerns, issues and materials covered. This part of the Course constitutes the formal Student Competency Assessment process towards the award of the IGE-PEARL Certificate of Study.
